This #329 Aladdin tan shade manufactured in 1947 was a "special reflector type shade" manufactured specifically for hanging lamps. It was made of Opaque Alpha Paper and designed to reflect the lamps light downward for reading or on a dining table.
While the bottom measurement of this shade is 14 inches, similar to many of the Whip-O-Lite shades, it differs in the top opening dimension which is only 7 inches. The top opening on the more common Whip-O-Lite shades is 9 inches in comparison. The smaller top opening of the Alpha shade causes the sides of the shade itself to slope upward at a steeper angle and therefore reflect more of the lamps light downward.
The #329 shade was manufactured in 1942 and 1943 as well, but from the description in the sales brochure for those years that shade, while being the same dimensions, had a 4 1/2 inch inner ring at the top as well. The inner ring was probably designed to fit over the glass chimney allowing the shade to be used without any other type of shade ring. While the brochure describes the inner ring I have yet to find an example of this shade that has one.
